Module 4 - Finalist Threories
- Which of the finalist theories appeals to you the most?
Of the finalist theory, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (also referred to as “Virtue Ethics”) appeals to me most. Aristotle, in his theory, recognizes HAPPINESS as man’s highest end and the life of REASON is the happiest. He acknowledges that man is a rational being that can make sensible decision and be responsible of his actions. He also emphasizes that by being virtuous, man can attain complete happiness. He lay down the VIRTUES man must demonstrate to attain happiness – the moral virtue and the intellectual virtue. Moral virtue (known as virtue of character) directs us to what is right and to obey and listen to reason. Intellectual virtue (known as virtue of thought) enables us to grasp, deliberate and discern the truth concerning the particulars and the individuals, all of which requires reason.
- Which (finalist theory) do you think seems to predominate in the world of computing as you know it?
I think Utilitarianism predominate the computing world. Some software professionals and users make use of information technology for the happiness of the greatest number without second thought on the effects of their actions on other software professionals and users. A good example is software piracy, though against the law yet many are into it because software is so expensive. Many computer professionals and users can’t afford to buy it so they resort to buying pirated copies. Acquiring expensive software at a low cost definitely brings happiness to a lot of professionals and users.
